Trace State Park Fishing Report - 8/7/2023 8:27:25 AM

Largemouth Bass The bass bite is slow, and most anglers are fishing early morning or late evening to beat the heat. Topwater or shad imitating lures are good bets, as are soft plastics later in the day. Anglers are still encouraged to keep a limit of bass under 12".

Crappie No current reports on crappie. Structure in 15-20' of water should hold some fish. Jigs and minnows, as usual, are the best baits.

Bream Bream fishing has been fair to good recenty. Crickets and worms are the go-to baits.

Catfish The catfish bite has been fair for the anglers who have been targeting them. Tightlining with nightcrawlers, koolaid flavored chicken, or liver are probably going to be your best bets.

The summer time heat has arrived and the surface water temps are in the mid 80’s. Bass anglers are throwing topwater lures along the shallow flats and points early and late in the day. During the day, anglers are moving off shore and are fishing humps and ditches with Texas/Carolina-rigged plastics, crankbaits and jigs.

The crappie bite is slow; not many crappie anglers have been interviewed lately. Some anglers are having some moderate to good success but others are striking out. Minnows and jigs are the best bets.

Bream fishing is picking up. Tightlining with crickets, mealworms, or nightcrawlers would be best, but don't overlook small spinners to pick up a few fish.

Few catfish anglers have been interviewed at the lake, so there's not much to report. Try fishing lake points and flats with cut bait, livers, or worms tightlined on the bottom.

Bass fishing has been pretty good recently for those who have found the fish. The main lake is clear, but the creek channels feeding the lake are stained, and more fish seem to be getting caught in those areas. Bass are moving up shallow for the spawn and this pattern should only get better as we move further into spring. Several anglers have been having success with topwater lures, but spinnerbaits, T-rigs and swimbaits should also work. Trace Lake has an abundance of small bass, and anglers are encouraged to keep bass under 13".

Crappie fishing has been fair, but some quality-sized fish have been caught recently. The rains and fluctuating water temps are making the fish difficult to pattern.
