Enid Lake Fishing Report - 9/18/2023 2:33:25 PM

Bass Fish shallow cover (brush tops, stake beds, timber, etc.) early and late in the day with topwaters or other “search baits” (spinnerbaits, bladed jigs), but have another rod rigged with soft plastics to follow up on missed strikes. Midday, fish main lake points with crankbaits or soft plastics. The edges (0 to 4 ft of water over the banks) of creek and river channels will be good during the drawdown.

Crappie Best luck lately has been fishing jigs and/or minnows or pulling crankbaits either in the main lake, standing timber, or the mouths of major creek coves for fish suspended 6 – 16 ft deep. Advanced electronics help, but folks are seeing fish onscreen that won't bite. There are a lot of "short fish"; use bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.

Bream Fish crickets or redworms under a bobber near any cover (brush tops, timber, riprap, etc.).

Catfish Catfishing has been good. Fish worms or stinkbaits in the river and creeks if there is rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish various natural baits over main lake flats or in the creek and river channels where the fish are heading to the main lake.

White Bass Cast jigs or small crankbaits over hard-bottomed, sandy main lake points early AM or late PM. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

Fall drawdown is in progress. Fish should be following creek and river channels towards the main lake. This week, nights will be a little cooler. No matter what the Tuesday fishing report says, always check the links in the "Water Level" section for the lake's current level and if it's rising or falling. A big rain can change conditions quickly. Adjust to current conditions like the fish do. Except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

Largemouth Bass Fish cover on creek channel edges or deeper cover (brush tops, stake beds, timber, etc.) with “search baits” like buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, or bladed jigs, but have another rod rigged with soft plastics to follow up on missed strikes. Secondary points in coves and main lake points should also hold bass.

Crappie Best luck lately has been fishing jigs and/or minnows or pulling crankbaits either in standing timber or the mouths of major creek coves for fish suspended 10 – 16 ft deep. Most folks are fishing from Longbranch Creek to Water Valley Landing. Advanced electronics help. Fish bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.

Catfishing has been good. Fish worms or stinkbaits in the river and creeks if there is rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish various natural baits over main lake flats or under a bobber over rip-rap. Grabbling reports have picked up with warmer weather.

White bass Cast jigs or small crankbaits over hard-bottomed, sandy main lake points. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

The water level is fairly stable. Fish early AM or late PM (or at night) and take precautions because of extreme heat this week. Enid Lake Fishing Report - 6/13/2023 2:52:34 PM

Largemouth Bass will be moving out via deeper channels with the water falling. Fish cover on creek channel edges or deeper cover (brush tops, stake beds, timber, etc.) with “search baits” like buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, or bladed jigs, but have another rod rigged with soft plastics to follow up on missed strikes. Secondary points in coves and main lake points should also hold bass.

White bass Cast jigs or small crankbaits over hard-bottomed, sandy main lake points. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

The water level is falling very slowly; recent rains and inflowing runoff have slowed the rate of fall.

Enid Lake - 4/25/2023 2:34:21 PM
Bass will look for the clearest water possible. Male bass should be spawning 3 ft deep or more or guarding fry in the backs of coves; don’t overlook gravel roads or 4-wheeler trails through recently flooded vegetation. Unless they are spawning, females will be holding on cover in the nearest deeper water to those coves. Fish bank cover or deeper cover (brush tops, stake beds, timber, etc.) in coves with soft plastics (including frogs), bladed jigs, or buzzbaits. Channels and secondary points in coves may also hold bass.

Crappie: With the water falling and spawn progressing, fewer fish are shallow compared to last week. Spawners will nest deeper with the water falling. Fish jigs and/or minnows 2.5 – 8 ft deep either shallow in spawning areas (males and spawning females) near cover or suspended deeper out from spawning areas (pre- and post-spawn females). Some folks are picking up suspended fish in main lake flats. Advanced electronics help. Fish bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.

No bream reports. Fish redworms under a bobber near any cover (brush tops, riprap, etc.).

Catfishing has been improving. Fish worms or stinkbaits in the river and creeks if there is rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish various natural baits over main lake flats.

Most white bass have moved back to the main lake; some spawners will be in the river and creeks. Cast jigs or small crankbaits in the river and creeks over a sandy bottom or over hard-bottomed, sandy main lake points. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

Prepare for a cool, rainy week.

Crappie start to spawn when average daily water temperature at “fish depth” is about 58, peak at about 65, and end at about 75 F. Timing and duration of the spawn depends on temperature and water level trends, weather fronts, and moon phases. Fish will spawn shallower in rising water, deeper in falling water. Bigger females usually spawn first. Males of any size can be caught throughout the spawn. Males will stay on the nest until eggs hatch and fry swim up (4 - 7 days) even if the water rises or falls (unless the nest gets too shallow). Males of both Black and White Crappie get darker during the spawn; females do not change color. Historically, crappie spawn on the flood control reservoirs from the last week of March until about the first week of May, but it may shift earlier, later, or be split into two or more peaks due to weather and water fluctuations.

Please observe and obey various closures and warnings around the Wildcat Brake, Bluford, and other upper lake areas as TVA and other crews are working to restore the transmission towers and lines that went down in the March 24th tornado.

Bass Fish shallow (topwaters, spinnerbaits) very early and late in the day or at night. Midday, fish 5 to 10 ft deep with soft plastics, bladed jigs, crankbaits, or spinnerbaits off main lake points or on the edges of creek and river channels near cover (stake beds, brush tops, timber, rocks, etc.) as bass move to the main lake.

Crappie MDWFP angler surveys showed suspended crappie being caught on jigs and/or minnows 4 - 10 ft deep over deeper water in the main lake or at similar depths in remaining standing timber. Active sonar is a plus. Some crappie are holding on shallow structure (brush tops, etc.). Use bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.BreamFish crickets or redworms 4 - 6 ft under a bobber near any cover (brush tops, riprap, etc.).

Catfish Fish worms or stinkbaits in the river and creeks if there is rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish various natural baits in the river and creeks with trotlines, jugs (noodles), or rod-and-reel as catfish move down the lake to deeper water. Cats will also be on main lake flats near cover.

White Bass Cast jigs, spinners, or small crankbaits off sandy main lake points early AM or late PM. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

Near record cold temperatures may turn the fish off temporarily, but temperatures should return to normal by the weekend.

Fall drawdown is underway; fish will use the river and creeks as they move to the main lake. Check water level trends; except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

MDWFP fall electrofishing started 10/10. Crappie, bass, and bream were on brush tops, rocks, standing timber and other remaining cover 3 - 6 ft deep. Catfish were more likely in creeks. So far, it looks like there was a good crappie spawn this past spring. Tiny (1 inch) threadfin shad were numerous. Bass 2 - 5+ lb were feeding on large gizzard shad.

Fall weather will dominate until a dry front brings cooler temperatures by the weekend, which may turn the fish off temporarily. Fall drawdown will concentrate fish in the river and creeks as they follow falling water levels to the main lake. Check water level trends; except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

MDWFP spring electrofishing was completed 4/28. Spawning crappie were seen 4/28 in the Bean and Bynum creeks areas in coves, creeks, and ditches in 2 - 7 ft of water. Most shallow fish were males; some females still were full of eggs. Over the 3 sampling dates, 45% of crappie were over 12 inches long (some over 2 lb). Most crappie anglers use smaller baits that appeal to smaller crappie (lots of bites, but few keepers). Bass (many 3 - 6 lb), bream, and catfish were in 2 - 3 ft of water in the backs of creeks and coves with cover. Carp and gar were spawning in recently flooded grass.

Early and late in the day fish may suspend 5 - 7 ft deep feeding on small shad; cast to these shallow, spooky fish to catch them. Use bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.

Bream Fish crickets or redworms 4 - 6 ft under a bobber near any cover.

Catfish Fish worms or stinkbaits in the river and creeks if there is rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish natural baits on lines, jugs (noodles), or drifting with rod-and-reel over main lake flats.

White Bass Cast jigs, spinners, or small crankbaits off sandy main lake points early AM or late PM. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

With a full moon the 13th, some fish may be spawning.

Catfish Grabbling season runs through July 15. Few grabbling reports. Post-spawners are feeding up; fish natural bait on lines, jugs (noodles), or drifting with rod-and-reel over main lake flats. Channel cats should hit worms fished under a bobber fished over rocks and riprap.

White Bass Cast jigs, spinners, or small crankbaits off sandy main lake points early AM or late PM. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

Local showers had little effect on the lake level this week. Check water level trends; except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

Bream Fish crickets or redworms 3 - 6 ft under a bobber near cover.

Catfish Grabbling season started May 1 and runs through July 15. Some fish have been in boxes lately; flatheads have been showing up. Fish natural baits in the river and creeks if there is any rainfall runoff. Otherwise, fish main lake flats either drifting with rod-and-reel or using jugs (noodles) or trotlines with various natural baits. Channel cats should hit worms under a bobber fished over riprap.

White Bass Fish jigs, spinners, or small crankbaits off sandy main lake points early AM or late PM. There are no size or number limits on white bass.

The water should be stable this week unless we get significant rainfall. Hot weather will push fish deeper. Check water level trends; except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

Bass Fish shallow (topwaters, spinnerbaits) very early and late in the day. Otherwise, fish secondary and main lake points 8 to 10 ft deep (any cover is a plus) with soft plastics, bladed jigs, or spinnerbaits. A May 14 club tournament was won with 24.32 lb (5 fish); big bass was 7.30. Over 80% of teams weighed in a 5 fish tournament limit.

Crappie Drift/troll jigs and/or minnows or pull crankbaits 15 to 18 ft deep in 20+ ft of water in creek mouths or the main lake. Early and late in the day fish may suspend 7 to 10 ft deep. The water should be falling slowly this week unless we get significant rainfall. Check water level trends; except for catfish, fishing is usually better on a slow fall than a fast rise. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

MDWFP spring electrofishing (4/14, 4/18, and 4/28) was completed recently. The spillway had both gates open 0.25 ft each (170 cfs) Tuesday. Fishing is better in the spillway when some water is being released, but not too much. For crappie, fish jigs and/or minnows 1.5 - 3 ft under a bobber near the rocks or anywhere there is quieter water. Catfishing is best in eddies with various natural baits near the bottom. For white bass, fish small crankbaits, jigs, or tailspinners in faster current; below the "waterfall" is a good spot. Fish for largemouth or spotted bass along the rocks with crankbaits or soft plastics. With low flow, fish crickets or worms near the shoreline rocks for bream. Spillway gate openings, flow rates, and spillway water levels can be obtained at (662)563-4571 or check at http://www.mvk-wc.usace.army.mil/docs/bullet.txt or http://www.mvk-wc.usace.army.mil/resrep.htm (click on 24-hour change for picture explanation of gate flow, spillway flow, etc.).

Enid Lake Fishing Report - 11/23/2021 9:40:52 AM

Bass Fish jigs, jerkbaits, and/or soft plastics 4 - 8 ft deep on main lake points as well as ledges, humps, or old roadbeds. Fish any cover on river and creek channel edges where the water is in the channels or up to 4 ft over the banks. Folks walking creek banks can do well.

Crappie Best luck has been fishing 6 – 12 ft deep for suspended fish in flooded timber or over other cover (brush tops, stake beds, etc.) with advanced electronics. Otherwise, troll/drift with jigs and/or minnows in similar depths (or deeper) in the main lake and creek mouths. Some crankbait reports are still coming in. A lot of short fish are being caught; use bigger baits and/or fish deeper to target larger crappie. Replace treble hooks with single hooks and/or pinch down the barbs to make releasing short fish faster and less damaging; it does no good to release dead fish.

Catfish Fish natural baits in the river and creeks as fish move toward the main lake. Otherwise, fish lines, jugs (noodles), or rod-and-reel over main lake flats with various natural baits (red, flavored chicken, cut shad, etc.).

Bream Few reports. They should be holding in the same places as bass.

White Bass Fish jigs, spinners, or small crankbaits off sandy points; Water Valley landing, Point Pleasant, and the Wallace/Hubbard Creek area are good spots. There are no size or number limits on White Bass.

Water levels are falling faster than usual, which means fish are moving out faster. All kinds of fish will be using deeper water (river, creeks, sloughs) to move to the main lake. Water falling, fish deeper; water rising, fish shallower.

Normal timing of fall drawdown lets vegetation colonize and grow on exposed mudflats until killed by frost. High water and late drawdowns prevent that growth. Next spring, the water will rise over bare mudflats with no vegetation to provide fish habitat and wave protection.
