Fishing Report

Ross Barnett Reservoir - 3/25/2019 1:45:49 PM

Bass

As the water warms, bass move shallower. Bass fishing can be good early spring because fish are in their pre-spawn period. Pre-spawn bass can be caught near structure with spinnerbaits or soft plastic lures. In shallow flats try using slow rising crankbaits and jerkbaits because these lures stay in the strike zone longer. Fishing for striped bass in the spillway is also very popular this time of year.

Bream

Some bream can be targeted around deep structure at depths of 6 - 8 feet. Others are around shallow flats. Use small worms and crickets at different depths to catch these fish.

Crappie

Crappie should be targeted along the edge of the channels and standing timber. Crappie are in water depths between 8 - 12 feet. Try fishing with minnows and a variety of different colored jigs. Crappie fishing at the spillway is good this time of year while the waters up. Here's a few good crappie recently caught at the reservoir.

Catfish

Try for catfish in deep timber with liver or cut bait fished next to the bottom. Fish can also be targeted with jugs out in the open water floating them through stump fields. Fishing from the bank on the Natchez Trace is very popular this time of year.

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Fisheries Biologists use various sampling methods to assess the fish populations in the State’s waters. Sampling results for selected water bodies are summarized in Reel Facts Sheets
