7/27/2019 First Bass on a Fly at Three Different Lakes (Sardis, Johnson, Vance)

I set my alarm for 6:15 with the intent of sleeping in and doing some bass fly fishing and filming at Drewery. Instead my body alarm woke me up at 5:25 which was early enough to try to get on some white bass at Sardis Lake near the highway 7 bridge.

I was having a hard time getting going and didn’t get on the water until about 6:15. Nonetheless, within five minutes of launching my kayak, I had small largemouth bass strike my popping fly off a grass line out from some trees.

I landed and released it without incident and fished with a little more pep in my step for the next two hours having just caught my first bass on a fly rod at Sardis Lake. I didn’t get another bite. Except for one, a very very small bass just out from flooded trees where I would traditionally crappie fish.

I then headed home and packed for a potential overnight trip. I stopped at Johnson Lake behind Resa’s and caught my first bass on a fly rod there with an olive wooly bugger fishing a ditch that runs through the lake. Second first of the day.

Cal and I went to Orman’s to look around then we headed to Billy’s to cook out and fish. Billy and I both caught bluegill on our Martin fly rods and Zane and I both caught bass, he casting and I fly fishing (again a first for Billy’s pond). Third first of the day. It was a good day afield.
