7/29/2019 First Bass on a Fly at North Cypress Lake (and a new fly rod PB!)

Whit and Resa took the Landry to see the Lion King yesterday. Me and Cal stayed home and filmed rigging videos. After the movie, Whit asked if it would be okay if they stopped by Mustard Seed or Tuesday Morning or something of that nature to which I replied “anything to get to go fishing later.”

Once they returned, me and Dub took the Corolla truck to North Cypress Lake. I didn’t particularly want to fish there because the water is low and the vegetation is high (as is typical for most passively managed Corps of Engineer public lakes) but it was the closest place east of Oxford and a storm band was headed directly at us from the west. Also, the last couple of times I fished there it didn’t go so well, as Tyler and Cody Singthong can attest to.

Nonetheless, I hadn’t caught any fish in a day or two so I hauled ass out there and arrived an hour before sunset. I put the kayak into the water and started presenting a Bett’s Bass Bugs Size 1 chartreuse popping fly along shoreline vegetation.

7:07 pm About 10 minutes in, a bass slammed my popper. I set the hook, got the bass to the boat and into the net.

7:14 A few minutes later, along the same stretch of vegetation I can an even better bass, my new PB on a fly rod again on the Bett’s popper

I had a couple more strikes including a very nice bass that broke my leader. It was a good day fly fishing in the woods.
