Memorial Day

Apparently Memorial Day is a holiday to celebrate and honor those who died in service, distinctly different from Veteran's Day, honoring those who have served.

According to the United States Senate "Federal Holidays: Evolution and Application"

"Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) and Labor Day became federal holidays in 1888 and 1894, respectively. The first allowed Civil War veterans in federal employ to pay their respects to those who have their lives in the conflict, without losing a day's pay. The second was designed to honor American labor and foster the feeling of brotherhood among the different crafts."

Now then. My Memorial Day Weekend 2017 began and ended with an interesting display of luck and skill with respect to pre-flight home-to-airport transfer. Let's make a long story short and say that my grandfather's timeless advice "if you were in such a hurry, you should have left the house earlier" was in play. But for video-graphic proof, see end of post.

Saturday, we swam on a giant duck and roasted a pork shoulder. Of course there was a little homemade water sliding.

Sunday, it was off to Olive Branch to Rick and Dinah's house for a little Farrell family get-to-gether. Pappy made ribs, and Dinah's sides were on point.

Once back in Oxford, we had a little more duck time before bath and bedtime, respectively.

I headed back Monday morning and snuck on the plane two minutes prior to departure. That's cutting it close. And the only reason I made it is because all the traffic lights from the Tennessee state line to airport were out.

How to (almost) miss a flight

I was supposed (and actually managed) to leave DFW on an American Airlines flight on Friday May 26, 2017 at 8:30 pm. Stupidly, I did not attempt to begin this trip until 7:54pm, when I left my apartment (some 15 minutes from the airport). But I still made it. Boom. I'd rather be lucky than good.

7:55pm depart apartment

8:04pm exiting for airport

8:16pm parked

8:21pm on plane with drink in hand!

8:28pm push-back
