3/18/2019 First Fish at Mill Lake/Kennedy Lake!

I continued to explore the National Forest in Mississippi when I went off in pursuit of a lake I found exploring depth maps on the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks website.

The website lists the lake as Mill Lake but my good friend Austin Holt refers to it as Kennedy Lake and so I’ll use them interchangeably.

When I looked at the depth map I was intrigued by the mid lake rows or channels of emergent vegetation in the middle of the lake I thought my hold fish, but would take a lot of time to cover, even with a trap or spinner.

Perhaps that was a self fulfilling prophecy because I fished both outter banks and channels without a fish or even sign of one.

I decided to work a cove on the lower part of the lake in 4-6ft of water and set the hook on a nice bass with a slow roll of the single blade dollar spinner from Wal-Mart.

I’ll be honest, I was proud of being able to find a new public lake to fish and then go out on an inflatable raft and hunt and catch fish. I’m not very good at it but I didn’t get skunked. And I proved to myself I can do something. I can make a new honeyhole out of nothing, nothing except internet fishing plus actual fishing. It was fun and I’ll do it again, maybe spending some more time on the crank.
