3/24/2019 First ever bass on drop shot
I went to North Cypress on Sunday after not getting to fish Saturday as a result of two soccer games and a birthday part for Zoe Reese (not complaining, just informing).
Since I have been hitting the lakes closest to my house pretty hard with spinners and Texas rigged soft plastics, I decided the night before to throw something I had thrown at them recently. I rigged up three poles for soft plastics as follows: zebco 33 on hot shot with wacky rig, Abu Garcia Silver Max on Classic edition with a Carolina Rig, and Zebco 33 on Shakespeare Durango with a drop shot.
Until Sunday I had never a drop shot rig. I have used wacky and Carolina rigs, with success on the latter, but I was excited to try out something new.
All the terminal tackle can be purchased separately but I opted for the Eagle Claw 194 piece “Ultimate Bass Rigging Kit”. From that I tied a 1/0 wacky worm hook with a Palomar knot leaving enough excess line to tie a 1/4 oz drop shot weight at the bottom.
I started out at North Cypress lake and struggled with a deflating raft and wind. I managed to snag one on the drop shot but a poor hook set meant I couldn’t land him.
I met a new buddy out on the water, Kyle Tennant who was wearing them out, but I just couldn’t coax a strike. Determined to stick to the three “different for me” rigs of wacky, Carolina, and drop shot, I trekked off to Denmark lake about 20 minutes away. There I battled more wind and rapidly deflating not I had to pump up between almost every cast, I managed to boat the first fish of the day, a baby bass I caught with a Carolina rigged black and blue crawfish.
With the skunk avoided, I fished with a little more confidence and decided to throw the drop shot for the rest of the afternoon.
I ended up catching 4 more (all small, all on a drop shot) using Zoom Baits Super Salt Plus 6” Chartreuse Pepper Lizards for 3 and a black and blue Arkie Crawfish Jig Trailer, lip and tail hooked, respectively. I am excited to add this new technique of fishing to my arsenal and plan on re-using again soon.
