3/30/2019 My five year old caught a 3lb bass at North Cypress Lake!

Last night as I was icing my shoulders from inflatable raft inflating related injuries, I managed to locate our Intex electric pump. It’s not that much faster than the included manual pump with the Intex Explorer Pro 200 and 400 (both come with the same pump) but it requires no effort and allows me to rig poles or load stuff down to the water while my bass boat inflates.

Since I had been catching fish pretty consistently this week at North Cypress, I decided to bring my kids out and let them fish my honey holes. I took Landry Tuesday of this week and she caught one, Friday, three and in general was pro-fishing at the moment. We got parked and the kids hopped out and started running around the woods. We got the boat inflated and everyone in the water and Cal starts screaming immediately. Why? No clue. About 30 seconds later he’s hanging off the side of the boat, splashing having a big old time.

Crawfish seemed to work for me this week so I started out throwing that. After about 20 minutes without a strike off a main point, we headed to the levee and tied on a Texas rigged Zoom Bait Super Salt Baby Brush Hog in Watermelon Red. I’d never fished this type of creature bait before but it was the closest thing I could find at Wal-Mart to what I wanted to use, a watermelon/red Lil Critter Craw, also by Zoom Baits.

About three casts in to the new bait, I get a strike, set the hook, and the pole doubled over. I told Landry fish on and got ready to hand her the pole but worried the fish would jerk it out of her hands. I loosened the drag, made the pass off, and we were off to the races. She was fishing a Texas rigged crawfish and Cal was fishing bait, so I had two poles in the water while Landry was fighting the fish. I was trying to video, help her land it, and get poles in, but amazingly we were able to boat a very nice bass, get some pictures and release it. Landry was stoked. My buddy Austin Holt has been harassing me about not having a scale when I send him pictures of fish that probably weigh less than they look, I broke down and bought the Berkely Digital Scale and tape measure from Wal-Mart. This fish was the first yet worth weighing. 3lbs 4 oz!

Not a half hour later we hooked into another quality (1.25 lb) bass that puts on a show but got in the boat with no fuss.

Fully satisfied at her fishing abilities, Landry and Cal proceeded to play, spill snacks in the boat, drop a pole out of it (we recovered that one) and in general raise hell until it was time to leave.

While I was hauling gear back to the truck, Cal got into an ant bed and got a few bites on his feet. He was very concerned, but didn’t cry. Tough boy. While on the boat he kept telling me “cotch feesh is fun”. I agree, son, Cotching feesh is fun.
