5/27/2019 Ten (or so) at Tippah With The Deep Water Dr. Holt

I always get excited with Austin Holt sends me a text message because it usually means we’re going fishing or hunting.

Last Sunday evening was no exception. It was Memorial Day eve and Austin and I agreed to meet at Tippah lake the next day at 5:20 am. We got there more or less at 5:35 and we’re fishing before 6.

I begged Austin to bring Cash and he was a good companion, causing us no trouble at all except for knocking a pole of mine in the water, which wasn’t really trouble as it was a Zebco 33 on a Zebco Hotcast. He also knocked a lighter in the water which wasn’t trouble either as it was my mother-in-laws. Oh and he got hooked in the nostril by a jig, but that was considerably more trouble for him than Austin and I.

Nonetheless Austin quickly caught a small bass off of a torpedo and later I caught a small one in the back edge of an old roadbed.

Bank fishing was slow and unproductive and at Austin’s good suggestion we went out to the center of the lake (about over the roadbed) and he caught 3 nice bass on a crankbait. Later, shortly after telling me deep water was his specialty, he caught another bass on the shallow flats out from the boat ramp. We went up the cove between day use and camping areas and I caught the nicest bass of the day trolling a weightless fluke.

We fished hard until about 9:45 and then headed into boat ramp where we gave away our stronger of 6 that we kept, which was shy of our one man limit by 2-3 small ones we released and one or so that fell off.

It was a great day despite the heat and having to work for fish.
