7/6/2019 10 Hours in the Woods with my Nephew

We went to my wife’s uncle’s in-laws to swim and eat burgers for the 4th of July. My nephew Tanner told his mama he wanted to stay with me and go fishing so he packed his bag and left it at home. Not one to not take a kid fishing, we made his mama go get him clothes and slept in Nana’s living room and agreed to wake up “real early”.

We got up at 5:30 and arrived at Tippah Lake by 6:15. We fished our butts off in my one man kayak and managed to grab four bass and a bluegill.

Tanner got strikes and even hooked a fish but couldn’t land one. We agreed to go get him a pole and some croakies and sunglasses like his daddy’s in exchange for checking out one more lake I knew to hold a a good number of bass.

Recharged by the A/C, we borrowed Billy’s truck and drove out to Mt. Olive Lake.

As soon as we arrived Tanner got in the water and started wade fishing while I loaded down the gear. He hooked another bass and we were both crushed to see it get off at the bank.

Our luck turned when little man finally got a solid hook set on his first bass of the day. We were both pumped.

We ended up fishing about 75% of the bank before coming in for a snack.

We fished another hour or so, grabbing four more bass before deciding to call it a day. We went for a much deserved swim after getting everything loaded back up on the truck.

On the way in we saw a lot of blackberry bushes we agreed to snack on during our outbound trip.

We made good on that promise and Tanner got some rest on the way home.

We took the fish to Nana’s and cleaned them so Tanner could take them to his Dad’s. I have photographic evidence they were thrown in the skillet and used in the nourishment of their bodies. It was a good day, and Tanner even used that momentum to go catch three catfish the very next day. Take a kid fishing!
