7/22/2020 First Bass at Wood Duck Lake
I agreed to come to Ripley to help my wife out with the kids but I didn’t have a curfew so I decided to try out Wood Duck Lake, a small pond on public land in the Holly Springs National Forest (Benton County).
I initially discovered the lake on MDWFP lake depth map page and took my nephew Tanner to it this winter on a pop up duck hunt.
I got there a little before 7 and connected with a bass on my second cast using a weightless fluke.
A few casts later at 7:15 pm, another bass.
7:23 pm another weightless fluke bass. Most places you’d expect to find fish (points, ditches, stumps on the edge of grass lines, etc. held fish or strikes. I didn’t catch anything over a pound but most were closer to it than not.
7:46 skipping half the lake chasing the sun, caught two dinks on back to back casts.
I ran out of flukes and switched to lizards and got some more good strikes but couldn’t connect.
I was very pleased with this close to my mother in laws lake and the fact that it held bass and was easy car accessible. I’ll be back with kids.
