9/23/2018 My First Early Teal Ever (and on public land!) Upper Sardis WMA

I’ve been in Mississippi full time about a month now and almost a week into the 2018-2019 Early Teal Season had only seen wood ducks. I rented a one man kayak from Ole Miss Outdoors and took Cal out opening day afternoon and we had fun but when we got there around 530 the ducks were already on the lake and flew off upon our arrival.

I came back a week later, but got there a half hour earlier (evening) and as I was paddling out to where I wanted to hunt I jumped a group of teal that flew directly away from me before circling and heading right back at me. I fired twice and dropped a little bird in the thick vegetation adjacent to the levy.

Dublin had seen the birds take off, saw the shot and the bird fall. He quickly and excitedly went and retrieved my first legal September waterfowl kill. If felt good to have a little freelance success at something I had never tried before. Maybe I’ll come back.
