Sunday was my nephew’s birthday party at my buddy Jim Garrison’s house. Tanner brought a few of his buddies. We were going to go fishing in Jim’s pond but I didn’t bring my tackle and he didn’t have any, so we agreed to go another day soon.

Tanner’s mom said she would drop them off around 5 but didn’t get there until after 7. Undeterred, I loaded up my 3 and 6 year old kids, my two year old dog, my ten year old nephew Tanner, and his two buddies Carson (9) and Brayden (10). We made the half hour trek to the Sardis Lake Spillway and got set up where there was some current. Each kid had a Zebco 33 rigged with a chartreuse 1/16 oz marabou jig.

WIthin minutes, Carson and I started catching fish (usually small crappie). Landry and Cal got in on the action, with Landry catching her first fish using an artificial by herself from cast, strike detection, hookset, play, and landing. Tanner caught a big freshwater drum, Brayden caught a pair of crappie, and Carson outfished all the kids.

We left the spillway to drop my kids off at the house and then back toward New Albany where they live. After we refueled with a pizza my wife put in the oven, me and the boys headed out stopping at Puskus Lake to do a little night fishing its spillway.

We didn’t do any good jigging but the boys decided to cut up some of the small crappie that we had caught at the spillway and Brayden ended up landing a juvenile a spotted gar using a crappie jig tipped with crappie to the amusement of all.

Taylor picked the tired boys up around midnight and we all agreed to do it again soon.
